Frans Steyn’s boot is internationally renowned for its sheer power.
He loves a monster punt for touch but what’s most impressive is his accuracy off the tee with a long-range penalty. From the 2007 World Cup final right through to the recent British & Irish Lions tour, he slots them from distance.
Today is day 824 of 1 449 being world champions, by the way.
Frans may have some competition from Griquas youngster Zander du Plessis, who also hails from Grey College.
During yesterday’s 41-20 victory over the Pumas in Kimberley, 21-year-old du Plessis converted a penalty from way, way out in the 70th minute.
Some say 62 metres, some say 63, but either way, it was a helluva kick.
The Citizen’s Ross Roche uploaded this footage to Twitter. You can see the range of the kick from the 30-second mark:

In total, he kicked eight penalties for 24 points on the day and was widely lauded:
That’s one heck of a big boot on Zander du Plessis. What a shot! #grivpum

Safe to say Zander du Plessis put his lucky boots on today. Eight penalties, including a massive long-ranger against the Pumas.

This Zander du Plessis kid is going to be a problem. Don’t see him spending more than a year in Kimberley

Much like Frans, du Plessis is also versatile, playing yesterday at inside centre after two previous appearances for Griquas at flyhalf.
He also starred at fullback for Tukkies last year during the Varsity Cup.
Nobody’s saying he’s going to win two World Cups just yet, but he’s one to keep an eye on.
