You can only imagine the desperation a person must feel if they’re willing to hide out in the bottom of a plane for hours.
Stowaways very rarely survive that long journey, cramped in a space where the air is freezing and oxygen levels are far too low.
One man was recently found having survived a harsh trip of this sort in the wheel section of a plane.
Flying the 11 hours from Johannesburg to Amsterdam, the plane landed on Sunday.
The BBC reported that the cargo plane possibly made one stop in Nairobi, Kenya – although it has not been confirmed where exactly the man started his journey from.
The stowaway’s age and nationality have not yet been determined, either.
When he was found at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, the authorities helped warm him up, and by the time an ambulance arrived, he was able to answer basic questions.
Everyone is gobsmacked that he managed to survive:
“The man was found alive in the nose wheel section of the plane and was taken to hospital in a stable condition,” Royal Dutch Military Police spokeswoman Joanna Helmonds told the AFP news agency.
“It is quite remarkable that the man is still alive,” she said.
This video, detailing a similar story back in 2016, shows the exact spot that a stowaway might hide in on a plane:
The stowaway looks to have been on a flight operated by Cargolux Italia, according to an email sent to Reuters by a spokesperson for Cargolux.
The situation is still under investigation.
