I just don’t get those ‘new car in the showroom’ social media posts.
The bow tied around the bonnet, the new owner holding the keys – wow, congrats on buying a thing.
Maybe that’s because I’m about as interested in cars as I am in Julius Malema’s latest attention-grabbing antics (not at all).
If you do buy a new car the first thing you’ll want to do is drive it off the showroom floor and onto the streets, without smashing it through the shop window.
According to SA People this was a step too far for one woman in Durban:
Paramedics were called to a Volkswagen dealership in Durban’s city centre, where a female customer had apparently driven a brand new car right through the store’s front window…
Fortunately the woman, who is believed to be in her ’30s, didn’t suffer any injuries, although her ego may be a little bruised.
Private emergency response company Emer-G-Med responded to the incident and issued this short statement:
KWAZULU-NATAL
DURBANRV14 responded to a Volkswagen dealership in the Durban CBD. Reports from the scene are that a customer accidentally drove a brand new vehicle through the shop front windows.
There were no serious injuries on scene.

Did the woman also buy her licence?
The old saying goes that a car loses 10% of its value once you drive it off the lot.
Smash it through the shop window on your way out and you’re really in the dwang.
