The year is 2021 and yes, women are still being told what to wear.
Although I acknowledge that there are much larger fish to fry right now, I can understand why Olivia Culpo and her fans are flabbergasted by this outdated American Airlines dress code.
The 29-year-old actress and model and her sister Aurora were about to board the plane to Cabo San Luca, Mexico, when an airline employee stopped them in their tracks.
Olivia, dressed in some on-trend athleisure – a black bralette, biker shorts, and an oversized black cardigan – was asked to cover up or she would be booted from the flight.
In shock and frustration, Aurora shared the experience on Instagram:
The former Miss Universe was able to board the flight in the end after borrowing her NFL boyfriend, Christian McCaffrey’s grey hoodie.
That also turned into a bit of a joke:
TODAY noted how Culpo wasn’t the first passenger to be told what to wear before boarding a flight:
In 2020, a Southwest Airlines employee asked a 22-year-old from Chicago to put a sweater on after the crew saw her outfit: a bralette, maxi skirt and sneakers.
See?
Y’all I was KICKED OFF my @SouthwestAir flight because my boobs are “lewd, obscene and offensive.” I was told that passengers may look at me in my attire and be offended. The attire in question: https://t.co/tOAxZsFDU5 pic.twitter.com/S9W9gFXpg6

And American Airlines went a bit overboard with a woman’s outfit in 2019:
Here is what i was wearing when @AmericanAir asked me to deplane for a talk. At which point I was asked to “cover up”. When defending my outfit I was threatened with not getting back on the flight unless I walked down the aisle wrapped in a blanket. #notsofriendlyskies pic.twitter.com/AYQNNriLcq

According to the New York Post, American Airlines’ policy vaguely outlines that “all customers must dress appropriately and offensive clothing isn’t permitted on board our flights”.
So Olivia’s outfit is “inappropriate” and “offensive” to who exactly?
