What started out as a daily exercise session at the Mthatha Correctional Facility in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday (January 11) quickly turned into an attack by a gang of five inmates.

The brawl left one prisoner dead and another injured alongside a warden, who were both sent to the hospital to overcome their serious injuries.

Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo described the scene as “disturbing”, confirming that one of the attackers passed away on the scene.

The deadly confrontation was caught on camera:

No motive for the attack has been revealed as of yet, The Citizen reported:

Members of the South African Police Service (Saps) were called to the scene and Nxumalo said an investigation is currently underway.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services has also been informed and will run its own independent investigation.

The situation is apparently under control now, but wardens and inmates are remaining vigilant.
