Netflix is great, but it has taken some time to get into the prestige film game.
Last year at least, the streaming giant managed to create a number of excellent original movies, some of which are likely to be Oscar nominees.
Forbes put together a list of the top 10 original movies released last year, ranked by the critics and their Rotten Tomatoes scores.
It may or may not come as a surprise to you, but some of the most popular flicks from the year did not make the cut.
Think Red Notice and Don’t Look Up.
Rather it is a Netflix animation at the top, which could well give Pixar and Disney the boot at the Oscars.
The second highest reviewed film is Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst’s cowboy masterpiece The Power of the Dog. With such a devilish twist at the end, this film is hard not to take seriously.
The same score was given to Olivia Colman struggling with the psychological torture of being a good mother in The Lost Daughter – a quiet movie that lingers long after you’ve finished it.
Then, two Fear Street movies from the trilogy have made it onto the list:
This was one of the most interesting experiments Netflix did this year, releasing these three movies in a row, homages to 90s, 80s and 70s horror movies, all the while feeling coherent and original themselves.
Here are the 10 best-reviewed Netflix original movies (by critics) in 2021:
1. The Mitchells vs. the Machines – 97%
2. The Power of the Dog – 95%
3. The Lost Daughter – 95%
4. The White Tiger – 91%
5. Passing – 90%
6. Fear Street Part Three: 1666 – 90%
7. tick…tick…BOOM! – 88%
8. The Harder They Fall – 88%
9. The Dig – 88%
10. Fear Street Part Two: 1978 – 88%
Granted, the reviews for Don’t Look Up were rather divisive, but I wouldn’t have been mad to see it featured in the top 10.
