On Saturday, footage captured an armed robber preying on a motorist stopped at an intersection in a busy area of Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD).
But right at that moment, a security guard drove past, noticing the robber pointing his gun at the victim in the driver’s seat.
Just as the victim was about to drive off, the quick-thinking security guard jumped out of the car and chased the assailant down the road.
Finally, the security guard caught the suspect and brought him to the patrol car.
The owner of Vusizwe Security, Vusi Xulu, told News24 that the suspect surrendered when he saw the guard was armed:
It turns out, the ‘armed’ suspect was threatened by the security guard’s weapon because his gun was in fact a toy gun.
The security guard could not locate the victim, and so no case was opened with the police. The robber probably just got a stern talking to, and was let off.
Meanwhile, there seems to be a bit of a trend in the area where robbers are out looking for an opportunity late in the afternoon when shopkeepers are leaving with loads of cash.
