Police and security officers in South Africa have to watch their backs, left, right, and centre.
It was a really bad look when two security officers in Polokwane were hijacked last month, with one of them being stuffed into the back of his own patrol car at gunpoint.
But an attack yesterday at a Sandton traffic intersection paints a far more concerning picture of just how brazen crime can be in this country.
An on-duty police officer, identified as Sergeant David Tsedu stationed at the City Deep Port of Entry, was robbed and shot in broad daylight.
Colonel Athlenda Mathe said, per News24, that Tsedu was accosted at around 11AM while driving along Katherine street in Sandown:
“The suspects are alleged to have robbed the member of his service pistol and other items before fleeing the scene in a getaway vehicle.
Tragically, Tsedu died while being rushed to the hospital.
Office workers from a top floor on one of the nearby skyscrapers managed to capture the whole scene on camera, sharing the footage to social media via crime activist Yusuf Abramjee:

You can see the assailants smashing and grabbing, but it is not clear exactly when the shooting occurs.
Someone in the video is heard saying that the getaway car doesn’t have a registration plate, as it skips through a red robot.
National police commissioner General Khehla Sitole confirmed that they are investigating the brazen attack.
