Prince Harry and his father Prince Charles have barely spoken in eight months, with Charles yet to meet his six-month-old granddaughter Lilibet.
In fact, the possibility of being “further ostracised” from his grandchildren will leave Charles feeling quite “devastated”.
The rift between father and son has been growing for some time, perhaps even before the main relationship-straining catalyst – the explosive interview with Meghan and Oprah.
During that interview Harry had accused his father of cutting him off financially, leaving him with just the money he inherited from his mother Princess Diana.
Plus, there is also his and Oprah’s documentary series about mental health, The Me You Can’t See, in which Harry talks about his family’s “neglect” and the “suffering” he was put through.
He even mentioned along the lines that those were some of the reasons why he cut ties with his royal responsibilities and moved to America to “break the cycle” of “genetic pain and suffering”.
Even after returning to the UK for his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral, as well as several months later for the unveiling of a statue of his mother, nothing was resolved between the pair.
The most recent hit that is widening the rift is to do with Harry one-upping Charles in business decisions, which has apparently left Charles feeling rather hurt.
The Daily Beast has more:
The latest nadir in royal relations comes after The Sunday Times revealed that Harry’s charities had received at least £50 000 ($70 000) from Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz, the controversial Saudi billionaire who was subsequently honored by Prince Charles with a British medal called a CBE after giving £1,5 million ($2 million) to Charles’ charities.
Harry hit back at the newspaper’s claims, saying he had “severed” ties with Mahfouz after becoming suspicious of his “motives.” He said he had nothing to do with what his statement notably called “the CBE scandal.”
Angela Levin, Harry’s biographer, is reported saying that Harry doesn’t mention Charles by name in his statement but “it’s a clear case of one-upmanship” as Harry “looks for any occasion to whack his father and criticise him,” adding that it is “sad”:
The Sun meanwhile reported that Charles and Harry have “barely spoken” since Prince Philip’s funeral with the exception of the occasional “fraught” phone call and that their relations are “at an all-time low,” with Charles “deeply shocked and hurt” by the attacks on him by Harry.
There are also concerns that more will come out in Harry’s upcoming tell-all memoir, which will widen their relationship gap even further.
This is all rather a sad state of affairs.
