Whenever I look at the cost of school fees these days I shudder.
As bad as they are now, they’ll be much, much worse when your toddler makes it to high school.
In terms of boarding schools, the 2021 pricing saw Hilton College claim top spot on the most expensive list. You’re looking at in excess of R330 000 per annum with Michaelhouse in second place at a tick over R310 000 per annum.
Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town set boarders back R277 800 per annum last year, making it the eighth-most expensive.
Take a moment to consider paying R300 000 a year per child for a high school education.
That’s at least R1,5 million over the course of the five years before anybody has a uniform, books, or a school outing to Europe.
Speak to expert financial advisors like the team at Consequence Private Wealth, start saving, make your money work for you, and maybe you’re in with a shot.
Unlike some others on the list, Bishops is open to day learners so let’s see where it fits on that list for 2022 pricing.
Business Insider SA’s Andrew Thompson has done the hard yards:
The honour of the most expensive day school in South Africa remains with Kearsney College [below], as it has for several years now. Due to its 4.9% fee increase this year, parents must pay R209,000 in tuition fees alone.
St John’s College, Roedean School, and Bishops Diocesan College round out the top four with fees over R170,000 per year – a ranking that remains unchanged from 2021.
Quite affordable is obviously a relative term but Bishops day learners pay just under R40 000 less than Kearsney learners per annum.
Clifton College in Morningside, Durban rounds out the top five and will set you back R167 798 a year, with the R12 340 increase the highest among the top 10.
Consider for a fact that a year studying something like law or commerce at UCT or Wits usually costs somewhere between R50 000 and R70 000 a year.
A standard BCom is three years so you would be in for around R150 000 to R210 000, meaning an undergraduate degree costs the same as a single year at many of the schools on the above list.
No matter how you dress it up another R200 000 for varsity still leaves a mark.
