The boys came to party and party they will.
They won’t, however, party at any official Plett Rage events because organisers have pulled the plug.
First it was Ballito Rage after 36 staff and guests tested positive, and now Plett has followed suit.
One day prior to things kicking off organisers released a statement announcing the decision.
This via the Plett Rage Facebook page:
With our beloved festival due to start tomorrow, the alarming number of positive cases are being reported to us by our customers, from their hometown, due to them being required to take the mandatory PCR before making their way to Plettenberg Bay has shaken us to our core.
Almost all schools set to attend Plett Rage have positive cases. Based on the trajectory of this virus, this is only a tiny percentage of what we are now certain will show up.
The numbers are only going to increase rapidly.
They’re not wrong.
Last night’s figures were a notable increase in both of those numbers:
#COVID19 UPDATE: A total of 51,402 tests were conducted in the last 24hrs, with 11,535 new cases, which represents a 22.4% positivity rate. A further 44 #COVID19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89,915 to date. See more here: https://t.co/hXm94RFN7W pic.twitter.com/IVgMtR3OpX

The last-minute cancellation is clearly the correct call but you have to feel for the students.
During an eNCA segment filmed yesterday, reporter Nobesuthu Hejane spoke to some would-be partygoers.
Skip ahead to the three-minute mark to see the boys who came to party:
For your convenience here’s the same clip trimmed down on Twitter:

That sort of news will ruin a good bodysurfing sesh.
This sort of news will ruin a good festive season:
South Africa🇿🇦 into its 4th wave 🌊
As Gauteng surges, with other provinces now following, case incidence across SA now above 8.8 new cases per 100k and test positivity above 12% 🚩
Based on previous experience, have breached tipping points or thresholds for sustained increase pic.twitter.com/XlwbmQ5yR8

“I think we need to get comfortable with the fact that (in this fourth wave, peaking in 2 to 3 weeks) we’re going to have 30 000 to 40 000 new cases a day.” ~ Prof Shabir Madhi on eNCA

It sucks.
But this is the reality we are faced with.
If you’re going to party, party safely.
