The time has come again when Spotify releases the most played songs, artists, albums, and podcasts that defined the past year.
Your social media feeds are probably stacked with everyone’s personal Spotify Wrapped lists, divulging who they listened to during the various ups and downs of 2021.
You can bet your bottom dollar that I’ve been screenshotting those and making new assumptions and narratives about you based on your “audio aura” and listening choices.
Jokes, I don’t have time for that.
It’s been a whirlwind year, so it is nice to get some structured feedback about what has been going on, even if it is just in the form of what music was most streamed.
As Spotify says, the 2021 Wrapped is celebrating the “millions of weird and wonderful ways to listen and live in a world that continues to keep us on our toes”.
Time to check out how your Spotify Wrapped compares to the other 381 million people in the world.
Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Bad Bunny is the most streamed artist globally for the second year in a row now, all without even releasing a new album this year.
This is one of his most streamed songs on Spotify, with over five million listens:
Then, Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version) put her in second place, followed by the beloved K-pop group BTS, Drake, who put Certified Lover Boy out in September, and Justin Bieber.
As for the top songs of 2021 globally, Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘drivers license’ was played more than 1,1 billion times, putting her in the number one spot, while Lil Nas X’s ‘MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)’ jives in second place.
The most streamed albums of 2021 globally are:
The most streamed podcast for the past year is The Joe Rogan Experience, which has become a Spotify exclusive, while true crime and news remain as popular as ever:
Some notable trends that Spotify picked up over the year was a 1 400% rise in streams for plant growing playlists, as well as 42 million streams of vaccine-related playlists propping up, with songs like ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’ by Pat Benatar added in.
There’s more, which you can browse here.
Otherwise, be sure to see what your audio story was for the year in the 2021 Wrapped personal experience, which you should spot on the front page of your Spotify app.
Update the app if it doesn’t appear, and it should be there.
I am off to bask in my “audio aura” of kindness and wistfulness.
