Warm water.
That’s about the only reason I would prioritise visiting Durban over Cape Town.
Relax, I jest.
If you were hoping to get up to mischief in Durban this coming weekend, you may be saddened to know that cocaine worth in excess of R240 million was seized during a recent bust at Durban harbour.
Given where it originated from, you’d imagine it was the potent stuff, too. News24 reports:
In a statement on Tuesday, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo said the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team found cocaine weighing more than 600kg on Thursday.
“The team received information about an MSC vessel that was sailing from South America to South Africa, transporting containers with wooden floorboards which had cocaine concealed within the consignment,” said Mbambo.
When the ship arrived last Thursday the containers were duly searched.
Between the floorboards officers found black sports bags rammed with bricks of cocaine.
Quick, someone lock down the evidence before it’s stolen from the Hawks themselves. Seriously – 541 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of around R200 million was stolen from the Hawks’ offices in Port Shepstone last month.
Despite the sizeable haul at Durban harbour, no arrests were made, with Mbambo saying investigations are still being carried out.
No arrests have been made regarding the cocaine theft from the Port Shepstone office, either.
The unit’s National Head Godfrey Lebeya has appointed a team to handle that investigation.
