Ryan Reynolds said he was not crying during his reaction video to Canada’s love song for him.

Rather, it was maple syrup.

The actor, who hails from Vancouver, received one of his home country’s Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards on Friday.

If ever he doubted that his home country loved him as much as he loves it, now he knows for absolute sure.

With the award came a tribute song by Steven Page from Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies, singing loudly and proudly that ‘Canada Loves You Back’.

The 45-year-old did indeed shed real tears, no matter whether they were salty or sweet:

Per Mashable, the Governor General’s Awards are presented every year to Canadian recipients in literature, media, performing arts, and more:

Reynolds received the 2021 National Arts Centre Award for distinction in the performing arts.

“Ryan Reynolds is one of Canada’s most beloved and widely recognized actors,” his award listing reads.

“In a repertoire ranging from TV sitcoms to animated and feature films, he has established himself as a versatile and engaging performer with a charismatic and quirky persona.”

The heartwarming song also featured Canadian actor and space traveller William Shatner, as well as volunteers from charitable groups Reynolds has supported.

Reynolds posted on Instagram on Saturday, which is where the maple syrup comment came from:

He continued, “Also, it’s worth noting @stevenpage is not only a friend but an absolute legend. He wasted this perfectly awesome song on me. Thank you to Her Excellency, The Right Honourable @governorgeneralcanada, Mary Simon. Thank you to the @nac.cna for keeping the performing arts alive and well throughout Canada and being a champion for voices which have been historically silenced or overlooked.”
