The Roy family, made famous in Succession, aren’t known for their demure manner.
Over the course of the show’s three seasons, we’ve grown used to hearing a steady stream of expletives, especially from the likes of Logan Roy.
Episode seven of season three aired last night in the US and the family’s thoroughly enjoyable dysfunction continues unabated.
When it comes to loaded silences we’re headed back to episode four.
At this stage we should warn you that there will be spoilers below.
Perhaps the most famous on-screen silence scene comes via The Office (the inferior US version).
Jim, Pam, and 27 seconds of awkwardness from the episode titled Booze Cruise:
Pretty awkward, but that’s nothing on Logan and Kendall. Here’s Mashable to unpack the scene from the episode titled Lion in the Meadow:
Kendall and Logan Roy reunite at a major investor’s house mid-blood feud in hopes of salvaging the family hold on their company. The investor briefly leaves the two alone at the start of the meeting, which results in a respectable 23 seconds of silence.
But those stubborn men were just getting warmed up. When left alone again later in the day, the father and son let an uncomfortably long 48-second silence linger between them. 48 freaking seconds!
You won’t see it in the clip below but the silence is finally punctuated by Logan saying “What?!”
Shouting matches between the two are nothing new. Perhaps the impact of the prolonged silence is actually a more effective way to illustrate the rift between them than another round of verbal jousting.
Well done. 48 seconds of silence.
What a time to be alive.
