A big portion of TikTok loves the idea of manifestation.
You know, the whole ‘Law of Attraction’ pseudoscience, which is based on the belief that having positive or negative thoughts can bring positive or negative experiences into a person’s life.
Videos tagged #manifestation and #lawofattraction on TikTok have billions of views, with people going off the deep end to try and make good things happen in their lives.
After a good few months of living in social isolation, with every day the same as the next, I kind of get it.
Until the wellness trend starts to become really bizarre and almost nonsensical.
Some TikTok manifesters are claiming that if you save the song ‘Time In Oblivion’ by iANO into your drafts, or make a video with the song, then something “life-changing” will happen.
Like this person who claims she randomly found $400:
@punkfectJUST FUCKING USE THE SOUND, YOU HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE!!!♬ TIME IN OBLIVION – iANO
This person also claims to have received a callback from New York Models after saving the song to their drafts:
@sophiaalopez10REAL EVENTS I STG #fyp♬ TIME IN OBLIVION – iANO
There’s also this person who apparently did really well in their high school finals thanks to the song:
@bexiei didn’t study or anything. damn thsi sound actually fuckimg works #fyp♬ TIME IN OBLIVION – iANO
VICE acknowledges that out of the more than one million people who have posted videos with this sound, “it makes sense that at least some people will have coincidentally had good days after ‘using’ the song”:
Like so many testimonials about manifesting, it seems more likely that thinking a lot about good things happening to you made you notice that good thing more.
In order to get a call back from a modeling agency, you must have already submitted a portfolio. Getting a good grade on a test, even without studying, may seem like a big deal when you are in high school but truly isn’t that big of a deal at all.
I’ll say “hallelujah” to that.
Another TikTok manifesting trend that took the platform by storm was the “Grabovoi codes“, which users claimed were basically “cheat codes” used to enter into the universe to influence your wealth, health, and love:
@spiritualtarotguideGoodluck!! also sorry i haven’t been active #cheatcodes #universe #universecheatcode #manifestation #manifest #dreams #shifting #spiritual #555 #888♬ Cloud 9 – Beach Bunny
So yeah, just obsess over the numbers an unhealthy amount, and maybe something good will happen:
The information missing from these videos is where these codes come from. Grabovoi codes were invented by the mathematician Grigory Grabovoy, a person who even manifestation and wellness blogs acknowledge as “controversial.”
In 2008, Grabovoy was convicted of fraud in his home country of Russia for promising the parents of children killed in a school shooting that he could resurrect their children.
Yikes. At least ‘Time in Oblivion’ seems safe enough from this kind of conspiracy.
Rather, it might have been a clever way for the song’s artist to promote his music:
“Time In Oblivion” was uploaded to Soundcloud last year, and was the very first song uploaded by iANO. They’re still making music though, and uploaded a new album last week. Their music is mostly laid back electronic instrumentals, and besides “Time In Oblivion” it doesn’t seem to have caught on. As of writing, they have 418 followers on SoundCloud, and other than their miracle song, each track has less than a thousand listens.
The song is not so pleasant, so I personally cannot listen to it without the hope that it will get me something good.
Here it is in full to do with what you will:
Happy manifesting.
