There’s a new musical about Princess Diana and Prince Charles with reviews that are far from glowing.
Diana: The Musical has been described as a “royal mess that just wants to be loved”.
Another headline for a review of the Netflix bio-musical says it is just as bad as Diana and Charles’ marriage.
The musical, trying to show respect for one of the most famous women of the 20th century, ultimately seems to lack enough insight to prevent it from being a total snoozefest.
Some have even gone so far as to call it exploitative.
Covering all the familiar moments in the royals’ life through song and dance is no easy feat, especially when there are other more impressive contenders out there.
We’re looking at Kirsten Stewart’s biopic Spencer, which is in theatres now.
Mashable also has some disparaging words for the Broadway show, saying it “doesn’t know what it wants to be, so it tries a little of everything”:
There are almost too many ill-conceived choices to count: the lyrics, by Joe DiPietro & David Bryan, are basic to the point of stupidity (“Him & Her (& Him & Her”); choreography by Kelly Devine appears amateurish and clunky.
There’s a song with liberal uses of the word “fuckity” to describe her infamous revenge dress.
The review goes on to call the musical a “tepid reenactment of a show you’ve seen before”.
Ouch.
Basically, what you are left with is a two-and-a-half-hour show that completely lacks any excitement.
Although, there are some elements that are commendable.
William Ivey Long’s costume design is arguably the best part, “perfectly channelling many of Diana’s most famous looks”.
This is likely one to avoid on Netflix but we’ll show you the trailer so that you know what you’re getting yourself into:
