Quentin Tarantino is planning on selling non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based on the screenplay for his 1994 movie Pulp Fiction.
But Harvey Weinstein’s Hollywood studio is having none of it.
Miramax, which owns the rights to the cult classic, has filed a lawsuit accusing the director of copyright infringement for his plans to sell his NFTs.
The lawsuit is following Tarantino’s announcement at a crypto-art event in New York earlier this month that he would be selling seven original scenes from the film as NFTs.
NFTs are usually “minted” on a blockchain to give it a verified identity, making them very valuable collectables.
The Pulp Fiction NFTs will include excerpts from the original, handwritten film script, plus exclusive commentary from the writer/director, reported CNN, which will only be viewable to the owner:
“Upon learning of Tarantino’s plan, Miramax sent him a cease-and-desist letter setting forth, in great detail, Tarantino’s disregard of Miramax’s broad rights to ‘Pulp Fiction,'” the suit said. “Wrongly claiming that his narrow Reserved Rights are sufficient, Tarantino remains undeterred and has refused to comply with Miramax’s demands to cancel the sale of Pulp Fiction NFTs.”
The suit said that Tarantino kept Miramax in the dark regarding the sale and that is “particularly problematic” since the director “granted and assigned nearly all of his rights to ‘Pulp Fiction'” to Miramax in 1993.
Miramax also expressed concern that this situation would make others pursue similar deals or offerings, which is forbidden as “Miramax holds the rights needed to develop, market, and sell NFTs relating to its deep film library.”
Bart Williams, an attorney representing Miramax, added that “This group chose to recklessly, greedily, and intentionally disregard the agreement that Quentin signed instead of following the clear legal and ethical approach of simply communicating with Miramax about his proposed ideas.”
Pulp Fiction is by far the two-time Academy Award-winning director and screenwriter’s most iconic work, with Django Unchained, Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood, and Inglourious Basterds following close behind.
If the sale goes through, we might as well just say we’ve hit peak NFT and go home.
