Uneducated foreigners love to think we have wild beasts roaming our streets.
Sure, Capetonians may spot the odd ostrich out and about (or enjoying a beach day) and residents of St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal are used to seeing hippos at night, but we don’t have the Big Five sauntering around our cities.
Not usually, anyway. Sometimes you can sort of understand why our overseas visitors are misinformed.
Take for example what happened in Groenvlei, Bloemfontein, on Tuesday morning. Residents were shocked to see two rhinos walking along the road towards a local shopping complex:
That rhino in the front is sporting quite an impressive horn, so it’s definitely not ideal that the duo was out and about in public.
There’s a simple explanation for this, reports Getaway:
The two rhinos have been identified as Shaka and Shakira, members of a local wildlife game reserve. The rhinos, named after Shaka the famous Zulu king and Shakira the Columbian musician had supposedly escaped during the early hours of the morning.
The owner of the local game reserve was made aware of their absence at 6am on Tuesday morning leading him and his team on a mission to track them down.
Thankfully, the rhinos only spent around 20 minutes on the road before being captured and returned to the reserve.
No tranquilliser darts were needed, according to Jacaranda FM, with the rhinos guided back by employees whose voices they are familiar with.
It’s believed the pair escaped after a gate was left open during ongoing construction.
They’re now back at the reserve and under 24-hour protection, so all’s well that ends well.
