An amount of cocaine weighing the equivalent of a grand piano was stolen from the Hawks.
That’s right.
541 kilograms of cocaine to the street value of R200 million was taken from the very organisation that is supposed to target organised crime, corruption, and other serious crimes in South Africa.
The cocaine was taken out of one of the safes in the office that were used to “store exhibits” and which allegedly showed signs of being tampered with.
Even more baffling is that nobody really knows when the crime took place.
IOL reported that police spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo said the robbers broke into the building and “ransacked” the office sometime between Friday from 4PM and Monday before 7AM.
The burglars are reported to have broken the window open to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime offices in Port Shepstone on the KZN South Coast.
KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating the crime:
Mbambo said Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya, the National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, had appointed the deputy national head, Lieutenant-General Tebello Constance Mosikili to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances of the theft.
No suspects have been arrested yet.
