On August 23 this year, 53-year-old Babita Deokaran was gunned down as she pulled into her home in Winchester Hills, Johannesburg.
Deokaran had long been a thorn in the side of corrupt Gauteng health department officials and was a witness in a Special Investigating Unit investigation into PPE tender fraud in the province.
In total, the tender fraud amounted to more than R300 million.
Six men have since been arrested and charged with her murder, all of whom have links to the taxi industry, and roots in the small KwaZulu-Natal village of Ngodini.
To fully understand how this ‘hitmen for hire’ business operates, News24’s team compiled a report titled Hitman’s Hollow.
It’s well worth a watch:
The video above points out that the men were preparing for a bail application on November 2.
During yesterday’s proceedings, one of the accused, Phakamani Hadebe, alleged that he was tortured before he falsely implicated former health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize and his brother in ordering the hit.
Further affidavits from the accused will be read in on Friday morning, after which the prosecution will lay out why it believes the six men should not be released on bail.
