Some of us haven’t fully moved on from Crazy Monkey’s 2005 film Straight Outta Benoni.
I, for one, feel a kindred spirit with those footskating fiends who were constantly trying to prove themselves.
Anyway, life goes on, and it seems as though that whole scene has seen measurable improvements.
For one, they’re calling it parkour or freerunning now, and there are actual athletes and professionals who do it really well and get sponsored by big brands like Red Bull.
Also, we’re getting straight outta Benoni, and going to Johannesburg, ‘The City Of Gold’.
Cue Australian freerunner Dominic Di Tommaso and his epic Jozi adventure that took place in July.
He starred in the exciting new project titled City Of Gold, which made its debut on Red Bull’s YouTube channel recently, reaching millions of viewers around the world, reports SA People.
City Of Gold takes on a video game-like structure as Di Tommaso runs up, down, inside, and out some of the city’s most famous landmarks.
This includes Hillbrow’s Ponte tower, Gold Reef City, the Soweto Theatre, Constitution Hill, and Sandton, with the last conquest achieved at a point at the top of the city’s skyline:
His video is sure to attract a whole new generation of video-playing tourists. In the project, Di Tommaso is teleported to Joburg whilst playing a video game.
The gold rush-themed project pays homage to Johannesburg’s moniker ‘the City of Gold’. Gold was first discovered in 1884 and the city was founded shortly thereafter.
It is a riot watching Di Tommaso flip about, levelling up in the game as he tries to bag the gold, all while showcasing Jozi in a way that a lot of us have never seen before:
The former ballet dancer and figure skater knows how to keep his movement as elegant as ever, which is one of the reasons why he has managed to gather 1,7 million followers on Instagram and 220 000 on YouTube:

He has even made himself a regular at the world’s highest-profile freerunning competition, the Red Bull Art of Motion.
