Jack Ma is not your average billionaire.
Like many of them, though, he does appear to have a massive ego. You only need to look at his ‘retirement party’ to draw that conclusion.
The past year or so has been tough for Ma, the co-founder of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., following a bruising government crackdown on his tech empire.
When you run afoul of the Chinese government, hardship usually follows.
For the first time since that crackdown, Ma has ventured overseas, arriving in Spain via private jet this past weekend.
His travels are being closely monitored, both by interested observers and (I’m guessing here) the Chinese government.
We know that since arriving, the 57-year-old has boarded his luxury yacht, Zen, and visited Mallorca.
There, he played golf and enjoyed a spot of retail therapy. VICE is on the case:
The 290-foot-long Zen left the island of Ibiza and sailed towards Mallorca on Monday, according to vessel tracking website MarineTraffic. On Thursday, the yacht was anchored near the resort city of Palma, the capital of Mallorca…
Ma visited a furniture store at the port of Andratx, and acquired a 69-euro sculpture that looked like a Buddha with arms raised.
Imagine having every detail of your life monitored like this?
Janet stopped in at Woolies to grab two avos for her lunch. Due to her lack of self-control, she also bought a dark chocolate bar (78%) and a roll of dried mango while queuing to pay.
Anyway, we can track where Ma’s superyacht is using Marine Traffic, which labels Zen a ‘pleasure craft’.
Zoom in a little closer and you see a pulsating dot, which shows the latest confirmed sighing:
That’s the dot just off the coastline of Les Meravelles.
If you’re in the mood for a proper Friday creep, pop in here, type ‘Zen’ into the search bar, and you can follow Ma’s superyacht on its travels.
I think I’ll pass. Life is too short.
