Cowra isn’t the sort of town that features in many of Australia’s must-see travel guides.
The country is massive, with much of the action dotted along its vast coastline, so it’s no surprise that tourists often overlook the rural town in New South Wales.
Throw in its recent droughts, and the joys of a mouse plague, and you can understand why.
But every town has something to offer if it’s marketed in the right way, so props to Cowra Tourism manager Glenn Daley and his team for their advertising campaign which has attracted international attention.
Chris Hemsworth serves as Australia’s national celebrity tourism ambassador, so targeting the actor with a #GetChristoCowra campaign was a great place to start.
CNN reports that the entire town soon bought into the concept:
In the ad’s video, Cowra locals (some actual citizens, some actors) dress up in Thor costumes, hold up signs and even make plans to build a giant four-story-high statue of the Aussie movie star.
That statue has been dubbed ‘The Big Chris’, and features prominently:
Fair dinkum.
Daley says the video was actually filmed in June, but could only be released to the media last week as travel restrictions lifted.
Not too long after the release, the man himself caught wind of it:

You can bet the Cowra locals will be making sure he honours his word.
Aside from Hemsworth responding, Daley says the campaign “has put Cowra on the map internationally, which is phenomenal for a tiny town”.
