Do we need another movie about Gotham’s Caped Crusader?
No, not really.
Are we all going to watch it? Almost certainly.
Over the weekend, the trailer for The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight himself, was released to huge fanfare.
According to The Verge, it promises “an even darker, grittier version of Batman than any that have hit film before”.
Christian Bale may not approve of that, but let’s dive in:
Set just a few years in Batman’s career as a superhero, The Batman promises to show not just a look at the early days of Batman but numerous other proto-villains and allies, including Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
The real baddie appears to be the Riddler, who has come a long way since Jim Carrey’s 1995 portrayal. This time it’s Paul Dano with a “far creepier, serial killer-esque style version of the character”.
There’s actually quite a bit to look forward to here, going off the trailer:
I’m going to dock a point for the use of coffee art, but other than that it’s all very intriguing.
At the very least, we should be in for some cracking cinematography.
As with so many other films, the release date has been pushed back and back again, but we now have March 4, 2022 (hopefully) locked in.
