Durban drug boss Yaganathan “Teddy Mafia” Pillay was slain earlier this year when he invited the killers into his home.
Those killers never made it out alive, either, as they were beheaded and burnt in full view of the community, with videos that went viral on social media.
Police suspect that Teddy Mafia’s murder, and all the back and forth vengeance that has followed since is linked to the control of the lucrative drug trade in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal, reports IOL.
In the latest gangland incident, Teddy Mafia’s son-in-law survived a daring attempted assassination on Wednesday morning.
The shoot-out occurred at 10AM on Table Mountain Road in Shallcross, south of Durban, where Kesavan Isaac Naidoo, 41, was shot twice.
Naidoo was driving with another passenger at the time, who was also consequently shot, confirmed police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele, via News24:
“It is alleged that a vehicle, with two occupants were travelling along Table Mountain Road when suspects began shooting at the occupants. The suspects who were travelling in a white vehicle fled from the scene.”
CCTV footage shows a number-plateless white Toyota Corolla driving to the side of the road and coming to a stop just as a Toyota Fortuner, with Naidoo inside, stops some distance behind.
You can watch the dramatic scene unfold here:
Ronnie Pillay, the brother of Yaganathan Pillay, is reported saying that Naidoo was shot in the legs and the driver in the hand.
A bullet hole and blood can be seen on the vehicle that Naidoo was travelling in:
Mbele said that the two victims, aged 28 and 41, were taken to a local hospital where they were put in a stable condition.
He also added that two counts of attempted murder will be opened for investigation at the Chatsworth police station.
