Can Checkers Replicate Amazon Prime Day?

Checkers is doing something similar to Amazon, which offers members-only ‘Prime deals’ to customers who sign up for its rewards programme, with this weekend's massive sale.

It looks like this weekend you will be able to buy champagne and steak with a 50% saving in any Checkers store.

The only catch is that you will need to sign up for the Checkers Xtra Savings rewards programme.

At least Xtra Savings is free to use and sign up for, unlike many other rewards programmes out there.

The retailer has said that the sales weekend is in line with trends offered internationally, with global retailers such as Amazon offering members-only ‘Prime deals’ to customers who sign up for its rewards programme, reports BusinessTech:

“As is the case with international retailers who run annual members-only events, Checkers will offer deep discounts exclusively for Xtra Savings cardholders.”

Checkers’ first members-only sales “Xtra Xtra” weekend will be the biggest sale of the year, running from October 15 to 17 – this Friday to Sunday.

There will be 5 000 top-selling items and premium products on promotion, with an expected saving of up to 50% on many of them.

This includes champagne and steak, of course.

The other deals will be listed in an advertisement later this week.

Checkers boasts more than eight million shoppers who have now signed up for its Xtra Savings programme since launching in October 2019.

There are free in-store sign-ups at any Checkers, Checkers Hyper, or Checkers LiquorShop branches, or via one of the following paperless channels:

  • Add Checkers (+27 87 240 5385) as a WhatsApp contact and say “Hi!”
  • Scan the QR code on the back of your Xtra Savings card and sign-up online
  • Dial *134*835*CARDNUMBER# and follow the prompts
  • Download the Checkers app from your app store

After a long week of dodging load-shedding, sign me up. A deeply discounted hunk of meat paired with some bubbles might be the only fix.
