Despite what some misinformed folk from certain countries in the great West might think, it is not every day in South Africa that you get to see a massive lion right at your car window.
Not even a few days searching the Kruger National Park can guarantee such an encounter.
Well, a pair of safari-goers were lucky enough to come across a couple of curious male lions a few days ago, two of which came head-to-head with them while they sat in their car.
Latest Sightings reported that the close-up moment was captured by 24-year-old, candidate attorney Simone van Schalkwyk, while on a game drive near Lower Sabie, Kruger National Park:
Yeah, I have no idea why, as a candidate attorney, Simone thought it was a good idea to keep the window wide open as the lion passed.
Simone said that they (the other person in the car’s identity was not disclosed) had gone on an early morning game drive because they wanted more than anything to find some “big male lions”.
All they’d seen was a herd of buffalo until finally, right there in the road, were a couple of giant male lions doing their thing; “finally, we had found them!”
“The lions were lying in the grass right next to the road and slowly got up – showing a lot of interest in our car, they came right up to my window looking right at me and even rubbed themselves against the bonnet.
The emotions were unreal and slightly mixed, I was filled with excitement as well as a bit of fear seeing these male lions up close.”
Not enough fear to close the window, though.
Simone said that he has been to the bush numerous times but has never experienced anything like this before, adding that he was “so lucky and blessed to have witnessed a lion look me straight in the eyes!”
Wild.
The lions spent a decent amount of time with the car, and then eventually moved on to do other things.
