French President Emmanuel Macron sure does get a fair amount of things thrown his way by anti-Macronism protesters.
In early June, Macron was slapped while meeting with hospitality workers in the Drôme region in southeast France.
The man who slapped Macron was quickly stopped by the president’s bodyguards, but not before he cried out “Montjoie! Saint-Denis!”, which is a centuries-old royalist war cry, before finishing with “A bas la Macronie”, or “Down with Macronism”.
This time, at Monday’s trade fair promoting French gastronomy near Lyon, the French president was pelted with an egg that bounced off his head.
This marks the second time in four months that Macron has been assaulted while on an official visit, reports The Washington Post.
Spot the flying egg:
The trade fair, known as the International Catering, Hotel, and Food Show (SIRHA), was an opportunity for Macron to meet restaurant professionals in the area.
It is reported that he was mostly thanked by the various industry professionals for providing state aid to hospitality businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
That is until someone threw an egg at his head:
Macron’s security detail can be seen overpowering a young man making a protest gesture and shouting “vive la révolution,” Lyon Mag reported.
Macron asked his team to interview the man, who is described as 20 years-old.
A local report mentioned that Macron wasn’t intimidated and said that if the protester had something to say to him, “let him come.”
Macron’s popularity as president has been a bit up and down, but his ratings have improved by 40% since the start of September.
Some analysts reckon it is partly because of his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
It is expected that Macron will run for president again in next year’s election.
I imagine he has prepared for further public assaults, too.
