That wildebeest has one crocodile gripping it by the head, and another clinging on to one of its legs.
In short, its chances of surviving would be scant, and those crocs are closing in on a sizeable meal.
Things don’t always go to plan in the bush (just ask those terrified Kruger tourists), and those hippos you can see lurking in the background had a massive role to play in the wildebeest’s great escape.
Getaway reports that Chase Kurucz witnessed and captured this unusual sighting at the Gezanftombi Dam:
The wildebeest does appear to have a limp following the crocodile attack:
It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact reason why the hippos would intervene. It might simply be that they didn’t like being disturbed by the commotion the thrashing crocodiles were causing.
Another possibility could be that they had young nearby, making them aggressive and protective, although we don’t see any calves in the footage.
Kurucz actually filmed the footage back in 2018, so that limping wildebeest has most likely long since been eaten.
There was another Kruger great escape, filmed recently by game ranger Pieter van Wyk at the exclusive MalaMala Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger Park whilst on a drive with guests.
According to Latest Sightings, hunting lionesses grabbed a young buffalo calf, but were fought off by the herd.
At that point, one of the older members of the herd became stuck on the steep bank:
“It was a sitting duck, unable to defend itself and the lionesses knew that and they moved in for the kill, being watched by younger cubs of the pride.
“But the male buffalo were not going to give up on their herd member and charged the lionesses, again and again, until they gave up on having it for lunch.
The buffalo becomes stuck at around the 1:40 mark:
In my head, I’m hearing the words “come at me, bro”.
Pieter said the “captivating and adrenaline-pumping sighting” was one of his best.
Given that he works at MalaMala, that’s saying something.
