Yet another tale of a doctor surreptitiously impregnating his patients with his own sperm has come to light.
We know about Dr Barwin, a fertility doctor who had to cough up quite a bit of money for his former patients and children in a settlement agreement from a lawsuit filed by one of his daughters.
Now Dr Morris Wortman (pictured above), a prominent New York fertility specialist and gynaecologist turned “serial sperm donor’’, is in the spotlight.
Morgan Hellquist, 35, said she had been seeing him for regular vaginal and breast examinations for nine years before making the distressing discovery that he was actually her biological father, she claims.
She has subsequently filed a lawsuit against him, stating she only confirmed she was the daughter of married 70-year-old Wortman in May, with the first inkling coming during an appointment in April.
The Washington Post has more:
The complaint alleges that, in 1985, Wortman impregnated Hellquist’s mother, Jo Ann Levey, with his own sperm while telling her it was from a medical student — and that Wortman nevertheless began to treat the daughter he helped create, starting when she was 26…
During the April appointment, as Wortman conducted a vaginal ultrasound on Hellquist, the doctor had allegedly asked Hellquist to take off her mask because she looked better without one.
Wortman also invited his wife into the examination room to meet Hellquist so she could look at the woman’s features and discern a physical resemblance to Wortman, the lawsuit alleges.
Then Wortman allegedly said: “You’re really a good kid, such a good kid.”
That’s when Hellquist realised that he was probably her father, which was later confirmed by a DNA test.
Every year from 2017 up until now she has found out that Wortman had fathered more children, numbering six in total:
Hellquist feared that her father was a serial sperm donor and that “there were other half-siblings who would continue to show up in her life,” according to the lawsuit.
It is safe to say that Hellquist is mortified that Wortman could “knowingly treat his own biological daughter as a gynaecology patient for almost a decade”.
The lawsuit added that if she had known, “she would never consent to be a patient in his gynaecology practice”.
That is why Hellquist is suing Wortman, claiming medical malpractice, lack of informed consent, battery, fraud, negligence, and infliction of emotional distress.
The lawsuit also explains that the man Hellquist grew up calling dad was unable to have kids after having been left a paraplegic at age 20 when a drunk driver crashed into his motorcycle.
That’s a lot to deal with already, and finding out that your gynae is your real father, a “serial sperm donor”, definitely doesn’t make things easier.
