In this day and age, we see so many video clips of violent crimes being carried out that it’s easy to become desensitised.
Oh, look, another cash-in-transit heist, or gangs driving through the streets with hostages strapped to the roof of their car.
Actually, that last one is pretty outlandish.
The dashcam footage from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, showing two Florida deputies being ambushed during a traffic stop, is also jarring to watch.
According to The Miami Herald, one man was killed during the ambush, which occurred at about 1PM on August 30:
“At one point during the traffic stop the passenger at the back seat of the car with a 2-month-old baby … was asked to exit the vehicle at which time he immediately exited and produced a short stock rifle when he began firing at the deputy closest to him,” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said…
That man was identified as Paris Wilder.
After his gun jammed, Wilder could be seen striking Deputy Brian Potters with the butt of his weapon, before Deputy Tyler Thoman fires his weapon multiple times and killed Wilder.
The dashcam footage shows just how quickly things go from a routine traffic stop to a life and death situation, with Wilder opening fire shortly after the 20-second mark:
Potters suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, as well as head lacerations and a concussion, but should make a full recovery.
Wilder was wanted on multiple warrants, with 23 felony arrests on such charges as assault and attempted murder.
Sheriff Ivey said both police deputies were in a battle for their lives, and have been placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation takes place.
