There’s not a nation on earth that doesn’t moan about its president.
The difference is that in some countries you wouldn’t do so publicly, because you could end up ‘disappearing’, or dying in ‘mysterious circumstances’.
Belarus certainly falls under that umbrella, with President (or more accurately, Dictator) Alexander Lukashenko notoriously bad at accepting criticism.
There would be a great deal coming his way if he didn’t rule with an iron first, like last year’s recommendation that citizens drink vodka and take saunas to avoid contracting COVID-19.
Belarusians may not be able to take the piss, but John Oliver sure is.
On yesterday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, he went in hard, reports Huff Post:
Lukashenko… is so self-conscious about losing his hair that photographers are only allowed to take images of him from certain angles.
Since that appears to be his sorest of sore spots, Oliver spent part of the segment taunting him over his hair… or lack thereof, complete with photos from multiple angles.
Oliver also played a clip in which Lukashenko demanded that people stop insulting him, insisting that it’s not legal anywhere in the world.
Newsflash, it isn’t, and Oliver gets to work proving that.
The apple also doesn’t fall far from the tree, with critics labelling Nikolai Lukashenko, the heir to the dictatorship, the “Prince Joffrey of Belarus”.
Settle in and let John make being nasty look like good fun:
