Teaser trailer – tick.
An interactive website where you can choose the red pill or the blue pill – tick.
Now we have the first official full-length trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, 18 years after the third movie in the then-trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions, came out.
That should help contextualise the movie’s title. Perhaps they could have gone with The Matrix Remunerations because it feels like they’ve revisited this one for the money.
You’ll note that the trailer is labelled ‘Official Trailer 1’. We’re probably looking at three trailers in total before the movie actually drops.
A lifetime ago, the first time you would see a trailer would be in the cinema, while you waited for your movie to start.
Credit must be given for the choice of song, ‘White Rabbit’ by Jefferson Airplane, which seems very fitting:
Now the hard work of trying to remember how the last movie ended begins.
I’ll save you going back in time because you’ll find a nice summary here.
For help unpacking what we can learn from the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, we turn to Digital Spy:
Along with other scenes in the trailer, such as Neo fighting ‘Morpheus’ in the dojo and a shoot-out in an office lobby, it really feels like The Matrix Resurrections is redoing The Matrix.
That’s not to say it’s a reboot/remake, but perhaps the replication is a key part of the plot..
The fact that Trinity is back suggests that we could be looking at the next iteration of the Matrix, with all the characters going through the same routine again…
It’s more likely that there’s some trippy meta angle to Neo and Trinity’s resurrections or some other major twist that, understandably, hasn’t been shown in the trailer.
The black cat appearing in the trailer definitely hints at a glitch in the Matrix.
In conclusion, everybody is speculating at this point and giving away too much in the first trailer would have been a rookie error.
Don’t worry, you’ll know when the next trailer comes along.
The Matrix Resurrections opens in US theatres and on HBO Max on December 22.
