Like many around the world, I remember with crystal clarity where I was when I first heard about what was happening in New York on September 11, 2001.
Glued to the TV, footage of the second plane hitting the south face of the South Tower (2 WTC) of the World Trade Centre was played over and over.
It was heartbreaking from across the world, and truly terrifying for those who were in New York.
Caroline Dries, a student at New York University at the time, filmed some of the most famous footage of all.
Here’s The Independent:
…she grabbed the camera after hearing the sound of the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center. When her video begins, black smoke is already billowing out of the north tower.
“A bomb just went off in the World Trade Center,” she can be heard saying. “It’s unbelievable!”
Then, while she continues to film, the second plane smashes into the South Tower, and they realise it’s a terrorist attack.
Before that, bodies can be seen falling from the building (one image has come to be known as ‘Falling Man’), with the impact of the second plane from around the 1:40 mark:
Another video, uploaded to TikTok, shows stunned students watching the news as the gravity of the situation sets in:

With the 20th anniversary of the attacks just days away, a number of series are set to air.
9/11: One Day in America looks like it may be the best of the bunch:
All six episodes have aired in the US already, to very solid reviews.
