Nostalgia, mystery, intrigue, horror, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
These are the elements of Edgar Wright’s new film, Last Night In Soho, that folks can’t stop talking about.
The Guardian describes the film as “a gaudy time-travel romp that whisks its modern-day heroine to a bygone London that probably never existed outside our fevered cultural imagination”.
It is also likened to a three-minute pop song, which makes it feel “thoroughly silly” but also “stupidly enjoyable”.
The main character, Eloise Turner (played by Thomasin McKenzie), still dealing with her mother’s suicide, attends the London College of Fashion during the day.
At night, she becomes someone else, somewhere else entirely.
She turns into the “vogueish, vampish” Sandie, played superciliously by Taylor-Joy, who goes on wild, nocturnal stints in a retro 1960s London.
But as psychological horrors must go, things get pretty dark, pretty quickly:
Eloise, no surprise, is living the dream and loving every minute. But her safe place can’t hold and the magic mirror starts to splinter.
The handsome wide boy (Matt Smith) she thought was her saviour turns out to be a pimp and now the predators are circling her table inside the smoke-filled nightclub. In the split glass, still more troublingly, she sees signs that Sandie, her alter-ego, eventually met a bad end.
Does Eloise go down the same path?
The Guardian awarded the movie four stars.
Last Night In Soho will be released on October 29.
