Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and he cannot wait to get back to playing in front of his fans.
However, unlike many musicians, Clapton isn’t advocating that people get the COVID-19 vaccine in order to facilitate that happening.
He’s refused to perform at any venue where vaccines are required for attendees and detailed what he calls his “disastrous” health struggles after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine
Most recently, he released an animated music video for “This Has Gotta Stop”, which many have rightly pointed out is basically an anti-vaccine anthem.
This via Huff Post:
[The video] features an evil puppeteer and protesters brandishing signs reading “Liberty” and “Stop.”
It also includes an illustration of Jam for Freedom, the British anti-lockdown street-performance group that Clapton supports…
“I can’t take this BS any longer. It’s gone far enough,” Clapton sings on the track.
Rather than recite the lyrics, you can dabble yourself:
I don’t reckon it’s his finest work, but I’m sure those who oppose any sort of vaccine or mask-wearing mandate would disagree.
Maybe Clapton would approve of the vaccine more if they named it ‘George Harrison’s wife’.
Naturally, when you go out on a limb like this, your past comments are going to be dragged up:
Clapton’s complaint about unvaccinated fans being “discriminated” against at a concert is ironic, given his recently resurfaced racist comments.
A visibly drunk Clapton asked from the stage during a 1972 concert for “foreigners” to raise their hands — then recommended they leave. He railed about “keeping Britain white” and said that he “used to be into dope,” but was then “into racism.”
The transcript from that concert is even more damning:
He later apologised, but it’s a long way back from that.
As Clapton has rallied against vaccines, so have other musicians come out in support of them.
Consider this from Queen guitarist Brian May a few weeks back, via EW:
May — who is strongly pro-vax — called out anti-vaxxers, including Clapton, for their ignorance.
“I love Eric Clapton, he’s my hero, but he has very different views from me in many ways. He’s a person who thinks it’s OK to shoot animals for fun, so we have our disagreements, but I would never stop respecting the man,” May told the publication.
“Anti-vax people, I’m sorry, I think they’re fruitcakes. There’s plenty of evidence to show that vaccination helps. On the whole they’ve been very safe. There’s always going to be some side effect in any drug you take, but to go around saying vaccines are a plot to kill you, I’m sorry, that goes in the fruitcake jar for me.”
We end with this:
Eric Clapton has completed his transition from Delta Blues artist to Delta Variant artist.
