You have to have nerves of steel if you ever find yourself needing to crash land a plane.

Doubly so if the only available space to crash land could potentially kill a few people driving on a massive highway.

That’s what happened on Tuesday afternoon when a small single-engine plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 5 near Del Mar, a beach city in San Diego, California.

Thankfully, nobody died, but the plane did crash into a Texas couple who were on vacation to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Someone managed to capture the moment the plane landed on the highway:

As you can imagine, the couple were shocked to find that their rental car had been struck by a plane, rather than another car.

Sarah Tribett told NBC 7 that she thinks they broke the fall, saying that the plane didn’t hit the concrete first but rather crashed straight into their car:

“We were just driving down the freeway and all of a sudden, something hit us really hard and then glass just shattered everywhere,” Tribett recalled. “We’re both OK but it definitely was an interesting experience.”

“It’s our anniversary today, so it’s not how I expected our anniversary to go,” the Austin resident said as she chuckled. “But, we’re grateful we’re both alive and good.”

She added that the plane’s incoming was completely silent, but that the impact was hard enough that it had nicked a second vehicle on the freeway:

“So, it hit the back of us and we knocked it off and then it spun around and the other car had its wing in the back of it,” she said.

“So it hit us, and then swung around and the wing got stuck in the other car.”

Two people were in the plane when it crashed, according to The Federal Aviation Administration, and it is unconfirmed how or why the accident happened.

Consumer Bob, an odd-named man who was at the scene, said he saw a man who appeared to be the pilot with injuries to his leg.
