America’s withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973 was immediately followed by full-scale war in the Southeast Asian country, despite representatives of the US, North and South Vietnam, and the Vietcong having signed a peace agreement in Paris.
That was supposed to ensure a ceasefire throughout Vietnam, and the reunification of the country through peaceful means, but that was not the case, and was really just a face-saving gesture by the US government.
It’s much of the same as the US exits Afghanistan after 20 years of war, with little to no success to show for it.
Last Week Tonight‘s John Oliver took an excellent look at how things reached this point during Sunday’s show.
Below via Paste:
Oliver looks back over the last 20 years of America’s catastrophic presence in the country, from how the US invaded it with little debate and poor planning during the Bush administration, through Obama’s expansion of America’s military presence and massive escalation of drone strikes, to Biden poorly implementing the poorly planned pullout the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban.
This will without a doubt leave a dark stain on Joe Biden’s presidency, but he’s also been left holding the bag after administration after administration botched things.
All in all, it’s a slightly depressing but highly informative segment on a complicated situation that looks set to get far, far worse as the Taliban’s hold on the country strengthens.
