The words ‘hand of God’ will forever be associated with Diego Armando Maradona.
His infamous handball goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final win over England still haunts Three Lions fans today, although he also scored a magnificent solo effort from inside his own half as Argentina won 2-1.
Knowing England, even if they had beaten Argentina, they probably would have lost in the final on penalties anyway.
Too soon?
There are already a number of great Maradona documentaries out there, but Netflix’s The Hand of God isn’t one of them.
Instead, the movie focuses on the story of Oscar-winning Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, reports Deadline:
For the film, Sorrentino returned to his hometown to shoot what is billed as his most personal story yet, that of a young man’s heartbreak and liberation in 1980s Naples.
The Hand Of God centres on Fabietto Schisa (newcomer Filippo Scotti), an awkward Italian teen whose life and vibrant, eccentric family are suddenly upended — first by the electrifying arrival of soccer legend Diego Maradona, and then by a shocking accident from which Maradona inadvertently saves Fabietto, setting his future in motion.
Sorrentino’s life was actually inadvertently saved by Maradona.
His family went away for the weekend, but 16-year-old Sorrentino stayed behind because he wanted to watch Maradona play for Napoli.
A freak accident with the heating system in the house claimed the lives of both of his parents.
Toni Servillo also features in the film, as does Teresa Saponangelo, and Marlon Joubert.
Netflix released the teaser trailer a few days back:
We can’t tell too much from that, but Sorrentino comes with serious credentials.
2013’s The Great Beauty (or La Grande Bellezza) won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, and the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
The Hand of God does not yet have an official release date.
