The price of petrol has skyrocketed again this week, but some of the precious resource was allegedly used last night, in what appears to be a malicious act.
A Mercedes-Benz was allegedly petrol-bombed in Geneva Drive in Camps Bay at around 9PM.
Cape Town Etc first reported on the situation, with videos shared from an eyewitness on the team.
According to their witness, a dog was heard barking and then there was an explosion:
“We came outside and the car was in flames with petrol flowing down the road.”
In the videos, you can see the vehicle (possibly a c63 model) being swallowed by flames, while bystanders try to put out the fire with buckets of water:

This video seems to be from a neighbour, who we can hear narrating the scene from his perspective:

The fire brigade and police arrived shortly after the explosion to extinguish the fire.

Via IOL, police are now investigating a case of malicious damage to property.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said in a statement released earlier today:
“Camps Bay Police registered a case of malicious damage to property for further investigation,” he said.
“According to reports, a Mercedes-Benz was damaged as a result of a fire on Thursday (2021-08-05) at about 21:30.
“The fire was extinguished by the Fire Brigade. It is unknown what caused the fire.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
