One Table View High School pupil has been suspended after a video showing him brawling with another pupil was widely shared on social media.
In addition, three others face a disciplinary hearing, and there are different narratives about how and why the fight started.
According to Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond, the incident happened last Thursday and allegedly began over a packet of chips.
Hammond said the pupil who is on the receiving end of the punches you’ll see below is not facing disciplinary action, whilst the other pupil is the one who has been handed a suspension.
More from Hammond via IOL:
“The school is dealing with the matter competently in terms of their disciplinary processes and has already conducted a mediation meeting between all learners involved, to which they all apologised for their roles in the altercations. Trauma counselling has also been arranged for the alleged victim.”
The account which shared the video tells a different story:
This happened in Capetown outside the school TableView High School. The black learner is at home peeing blood 🩸 from the injuries yet the white boy is attending classes like nothing happened. White Privilege always prevails. Please help me retweet #TableviewHighBullying pic.twitter.com/VHohSgXm2t

That account has the words ‘EFF Ground Force’ in their Twitter bio, and the party has alleged that the fight was not over a packet of chips:
[EFF Provincial chairperson Melikhaya] Xego said the party noted the video that was currently making rounds on social media where those two learners were seen fighting.
“It has also been brought to our attention that the genesis of this fight between these two learners started when a group of white learners took a mobile phone of the black learner against his will,” said Xego.
He said, later on, the cover of the phone was then later found in the school blazer of one of the white learners.
Xego said the fight that was caught on camera started when the pupil tried to get his phone back.
Every time I see one of these videos, I’m always taken aback by how everybody stands around filming, and nobody intervenes.
