Dad jokes seem to be in fashion at the moment.
An example – what do you call a blind dinosaur? A Doyouthinkhesaurus.
That made the shortlist for the UK’s best dad joke, by the way, so don’t judge me.
If you really want to impress kids at a party, as well as the other parents, you could do a lot worse than mastering “cardistry”.
The word itself is a portmanteau of “card” and “artistry”, and those who dabble are known as “cardists”.
According to Playing Card Decks, cardistry can best be defined as “the performance art of card flourishing”:
It is about spinning them, tossing them, cutting them, and otherwise manipulating them – up, down, sideways, and around, and however else you can – in order to create an aesthetically pleasing display.
In other words, it’s not card magic, and a more accurate description might be to call it card juggling.
Two of the best in the business are cardistry pioneers Dan and Dave Buck, and they recently sat with WIRED to run through 22 different levels of their art:
From a foundational Z-Grip to complicated cuts like the Leno, watch how these two card innovators demonstrate and break down everything that goes into the art of card handling.
Dan and Dave, do your thing:
We’re still in the midst of a pandemic, which means plenty of time spent at home.
You may as well try and master one unusual skill to show off when it’s all said and done.
