The Economic Freedom Fighters, or EFF, turned eight this week.
Leader Julius Malema took a break from threatening to kill people to talk up the contribution the party has made to the South African political landscape, with #EFFTurns8 trending on Twitter.
There was little mention of the VBS Bank heist, which helped Malema pay for Gucci, Louis Vuitton, tailored suits, and the like.
In fact, if one VBS depositor saved R2 000 a month, it would have taken them in excess of a year to fund Malema’s Gucci and Le Coq Sportif expenses at Sandton City in just July 2018.
Malema wasn’t alone in the looting of the bank, but it certainly taints all his talk of being a revolutionary and whatnot.
Zapiro agrees, and his cartoon on The Daily Maverick this week pays homage to the EFF birthday celebrations.
Is that trash champagne they’re drinking?
Floyd Shivambu certainly dabbled in some VBS loot, too.
Malema has been quoted this week as saying that “anyone who suggests that what transpired in South Africa two weeks ago is an insurrection, is a charlatan and opportunist, liars who have substituted their brains with hot air.”
It’s no wonder, then, that the EFF received a special message from one of those who sowed the seeds of unrest, Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla:

Hopefully, when (if) all of those behind the VBS Bank looting are held to account, Malema will join her father behind bars.
