You might want to pack up and leave when the waiter at Serendipity 3 asks, “do you want fries with that?”
At $200 (almost R3 000), a single portion of these fries will set you back quite substantially.
That’s basically a month’s worth of groceries for a single person.
Cooked up at the restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the fries were awarded Guinness World Record certification on July 13, reports ABC News, making them officially the most expensive on Earth.
That’s not the only world record meal on Serendipity 3’s menu; there’s also the most expensive burger at $295 (around R4 300 ) as well as an ice cream sundae worth $1 000 (almost R15 000).
My mouth is not watering, it is crying.
The fries recipe includes edible gold flakes and other lavishly expensive (and typical) ingredients:
The creme de la creme pommes frites start out as Chipperbec potatoes. They are blanched, or scalded, in vinegar and champagne.
Then they are fried in pure goose fat, not oil, and not once but twice, so they are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Sprinkled with edible gold and seasoned with truffle salt and truffle oil, they are served on a crystal plate with an orchid, thin-sliced truffles, and a Mornay cheese dip.
The sauce, too, is infused with truffles, a rare seasonal mushroom.
Honestly, some slaptjips on a lekker white roll still sounds tasty.
The restaurant’s creative director and chef, Joe Calderone, admitted that it is all a bit divorced from reality:
“Serendipity is really a happy place,” he said.
“People come here to celebrate, to really escape the reality of life sometimes.”
Despite struggling in the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant might just make a full recovery with the introduction of these glorified potatoes.
Apparently, there is an eight to 10-week waitlist to sit down with the world’s most expensive fries.
