South Africans love a good bakkie, and our new car sales for the month of June reflects this, with Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger taking the top two-unit sales slots.
Then again, our people also seem to enjoy a lekker SUV and/or crossovers, which are turning out to be more popular than traditional sedans and hatchbacks.
Granted, our roads are long and our baggage is heavy…
June’s car sales reveal that the SUV/crossover trend is likely going full speed ahead and the launch of several new affordable SUV models into the country has added some extra steam.
BusinessTech reports that the Toyota Fortuner is the most expensive volume-selling vehicle in the country, continuously keeping its spot as the top-selling SUV.
However, more affordable newcomers in the SUV and crossover space are gaining ground.
Namely, the Haval Jolion, which had some striking figures of its own:
Toyota sold 819 Fortuner models last month, claiming ninth on the overall passenger car list, and was followed by the newly released Haval Jolion (708 units).
Ford’s EcoSport remains a strong seller, with 600 units, while Toyota’s new Urban Cruiser (591) followed closely behind, ahead of the Renault Triber (551 units) and Nissan Magnite (532 units).
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa has the list of top-selling SUV and crossover segments for the month of June.
Check out the top five:

Bakkie or SUV/crossover, just remember to play it down the line when it comes to the new road laws and demerit system that is soon to be implemented.
