If you’re the sort who’s been glued to the TV for the past week or so, you will have witnessed scenes that are tough to forget.
It doesn’t seem to matter that the cameras are rolling, because it’s been total and utter anarchy in parts of the country.
Or, to put it bluntly, “well-orchestrated economic sabotage” aimed at destabilising South Africa.
Yesterday, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala joined in on the action, assaulting a looter on Queen Nandi Drive in Durban, while the Newzroom Afrika cameras rolled.

Yes, there are quite literally hundreds of videos showing far worse violence, but it’s dangerous to set this sort of example, especially when what’s been happening in some areas (Phoenix) is being used to stoke the flames of a race war.
It wasn’t long before Zikalala issued an apology via his office, reports News24:
“The premier apologises unequivocally about the incident. The premier regrets the level of force used in apprehending a looter, who was attempting to make off with goods that had been stolen from a nearby warehouse,” said Zikalala’s office…
“While the action of apprehending a resisting looter is justified, the manner in which this was done is deeply regretted. The premier apologises for this incident. The premier believes that public violence has no place in society.”
All that trouble, and they didn’t even apprehend the looter.
This comes just a few days after Zikalala said it would be good to have Jacob Zuma released from prison, adding that the former president “fought for peace and reconciliation”.
