Ashton Kutcher bought a ticket to head to space back in 2012, nabbing the 500th ticket for a flight onboard Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic space rocket.
He ‘only’ had to pay the original price of $200 000, whereas now the tickets go for around $250 000, even though Branson has said he would make them cheaper over time.
Virgin Galactic officials said they were hoping for takeoff in 2013 or 2014, which would probably have worked out better for Kutcher.
As you know, though, Virgin Galactic took Branson up into space this week, sparking what’s now being referred to as the ‘billionaire space race’.
A lot happened for the That ’70s Show star between 2012 and 2021.
He married his now-wife, Mila Kunis, shortly after buying the ticket in 2015 and had two children.
Kunis, it turns out, has become somewhat of a rock(et) block.
Kutcher told Mashable during AT&T’s 5G event in New York City on Wednesday that she forced him to sell his ticket:
“I was booked on a flight to go to space and, in fact, I’m quite rueful about the fact that I am not going to space,” Kutcher said.
“My wife asked me to sell my ticket to space because she didn’t think that it was a smart family decision.”
She probably just wants to keep him safe and sound in their recently renovated, gorgeous, sustainable ‘farmhouse’, and I don’t actually blame her.
Furthermore, in her defence:
Considering a Virgin Galactic spacecraft crashed in October of 2014 — tragically killing a pilot — along with another failed test flight last year, it’s safe to say Kunis’ concerns were extremely valid.
With some of the world’s wealthiest gearing up to feel microgravity for a few seconds and see Earth from the highest point, Kutcher appears to have major FOMO.
Regardless, he maintains that he will land up in space one day.
