As we enter another two weeks of adjusted alert level 4 lockdown, nobody should need to be told that a dangerous COVID-19 third wave is sweeping the country.
It’s really not just a Gauteng problem, with the highly infectious Delta variant found to be the dominant strain in wastewater treatment plants in the Cape Town metropole.
We have all grown tired of hearing about COVID-19, and waves, and adjusted alert levels, but we haven’t beaten this beast, and responsible behaviour aimed at curbing the spread must continue.
At the very least, do it for the healthcare workers who are broken, emotionally and physically, after 16 months of fighting on the frontline.
Read this open letter from a Cape doctor if your memory needs jogging.
A recent CNN segment has also shone a light on the spread of the Delta variant, and how much strain our healthcare sector is under.
The segment gained traction on Twitter after being shared by Tumi Sole:
It took CNN to put Mzansi on blast! 😭

Here’s the same segment on YouTube, if you prefer:
We were too slow to increase hospital capacity, and we have been too slow with our vaccine rollout.
If we could pay our taxes directly to Gift of the Givers, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.
But we can’t, and the best we can do is donate money to them (and curb the spread of COVID-19 through responsible behaviour) so that they can carry on with their life-saving work.
