The Cannes Film Festival kicked off earlier this week, and will run through until July 17.
One of the films making a splash so far is Annette, French director Leos Carax’s first movie in almost 10 years.
Clearly, the audience at Tuesday’s premiere were wowed, and to show their appreciation there was a standing ovation that lasted a full five minutes.
That’s great, but standing around for five minutes while everyone blows smoke up your behind can get a little tedious.
Just ask Adam Driver, the movie’s leading actor, who borrowed a cigarette and a lighter from Carax and lit up while the crowd clapped on:

Are we doing content warnings for somebody smoking a cigarette now? Apparently so.
Do your thing, Adam:

It should be noted that around the halfway mark, hundreds of people left the screening. Esquire reports that they were most likely unimpressed with the scene where Driver sings while performing cunnilingus on his co-star, French actress Marion Cotillard.
Back to the smoking:
It’s a move we simply must respect. How many awkward events have you been at where the applause is out of hand (no pun intended), droning on and on only because everyone thinks it’s supposed to?
Don’t you wish you could’ve stopped and lit up a cig just to deal with the boredom?
For Driver, he’ll live with no regrets. Drag on, brother.
In 2006, Pan’s Labyrinth received a record 22-minute standing ovation, so perhaps Driver got off lightly.
The Telegraph gave Annette a glowing five-star review, calling it “a strange and stylish start to the festival” and “the kind of film where going all-in is the only option”.
